What’s the best exercise for fat loss? Cardio, weights?
When it comes to exercise I am the worst offender, I am so lazy.
There was a time when I would jump out of bed at 6 am and go for a run, sadly, not anymore.
Maybe it’s not so sad, but a blessing that I stopped. It seems the benefits of cardio exercise on an aging body is not the best way to burn fat.
Excessive cardio exercise can apparently speed up the aging process too.
If you look at older women over 40 who do a lot of cardio, you can see it in their face. They begin to look drawn and tired looking.
The best exercise for fat loss especially for an aging body is lifting weights.
My daughter is a runner, a National Champion who spends a great deal of time training and running races. Said to me once, “Mum, when I get to about 30 years old, I am going to stop running, because all women who still run over that age, look terrible”.

You’re probably thinking, What!! I’m not lifting weights.
However, you need to understand strength training does not put the weight on, you will not become muscle-bound.
Unless you want to, however, you do have to work your way up to lifting very heavy weights before you will start to look muscle-bound. Using lighter weights you will become a lean, mean, fighting machine!
It is a shame lifting weights has such a poor reputation for women. Because of this, so many women are pounding the footpaths or treadmills at the gym, thinking this type of exercise is the best exercise for fat loss.
Maybe if you’re a teenager or early 20’s I would say go for it, but if you are older don’t punish your body.
I know it can seem quite intimidating going to the gym and doing a weights session.
There are a couple of alternatives, you can find an all female gym which is far more comfortable, or buy some weights and work out at home.
Best Way To Burn Fat At The Gym
I used to attend a gym many years ago, I was a great one for all the cardio classes, a spin class which is using the bike. Running on the treadmill, aerobics classes, if fact any class that got you jumping around all over the place I was in.
A young woman, probably half my age instructed a couple of these classes I attended.
She was quite a sturdy girl I used to think, and I couldn’t help but wonder why? Here she was doing these classes every day, surely she should be leaner? More muscle? Wasn’t all these classes the best way to burn fat? But no, quite the opposite it seems.
Then something amazing happened. She turned to weights, and within weeks, she looked amazing. She, unfortunately, didn’t continue to look amazing as she took her weight lifting to another level, where she was competing in competitions.
Nevertheless, she was proof, that the best exercise for fat loss is definitely strength training and a healthy diet. Because you can’t do one without the other.
You have to eat right because both exercise and good food go hand in hand.
Over exertion of cardio exercising will result in increasing production of free radicals. This, in turn, damages the bodies cells and speeds up aging.
If you insist on still doing cardio. It would be better for your health if you limited your sessions to perhaps half-hour instead of an hour or more.
Weights will also reshape your body, I know cardio definitely does not do this. So many mature women who were doing these cardio classes with me never looked reshaped. In fact, we all pretty much stayed looking the same.
In hindsight, I am sure many of the women who were doing these classes with me had separated stomach muscles from having a baby. These cardio exercises were not helping.
Weight lifting is the best exercise for fat loss because after you have finished lifting weights, your body is still burning calories up to 36 hours later. You don’t get that with cardio unless you do a really fast session for a very long time.
Lifting Weights For Fat Loss
I remember watching a documentary on television some time ago. On the advantages, strength training has on an aging body.
All the older people in the doco were talking about how fantastic, happier and stronger they felt, and how much weight they had lost.
When I was at the gym there was an older woman there, from memory she would have been in her late 60’s. She would come in every morning and do a weight session. She looked amazing, toned, perfect posture, happy.
But not me, I was running into my spin class, determined to tone up and lose weight and I didn’t look nearly half as good as she did.
Studies on using weights for an older person has shown improvement in balance, coördination, bone and muscle strength.
This is positively the best exercise for fat loss. Weights will improve muscle mass and give you a higher metabolic rate, giving you around 15% faster metabolism, which is great for losing body fat.
As you age, you lose muscle and it causes your metabolism to slow down.
I am fortunate to have a weight set in the garage, our daughter uses them often. Therefore, I have started my weight lifting program, I went to ‘YouTube’ for information on how to start, so I didn’t cause myself an injury.
Starting is the hardest part, once you make that start you will have the best exercise for fat loss. Now I just got to keep it up!
