The health benefits of oil pulling are nothing short of amazing when it comes to your teeth and gums.
I discovered Ayurvedic oil pulling quite by accident a few years ago. To this day I am still doing it.
My teeth and gums have never been in better shape.
Before I happened upon this wonderful practice, a cavity in one of my back teeth was getting worse. I winced with pain every time I brushed my teeth.
Within the first week of pulling oil, the cavity was gone. I have never had another one since.
According to Dr. Sarah Larson, the Indians have been swishing oil around in their mouths for centuries.
Despite its longevity and popularity, the health benefits of oil pulling lacks any scientific support.
I did, however, find these studies on this age-old practice of pulling oil.
I am sure one of these days there will be a spike in research, as many more people take on this experience.
When it comes to healthy teeth and gums Ayurvedic oil pulling is the way to go.
I was one of those people who always had a tooth problem going on. Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars at the dentist.
Not anymore, those days are long gone.
Health Benefits Of Oil Pulling
I have read a lot of articles on the health benefits of oil pulling. As the answer for helping with many health problems.
I can’t give you an opinion, I only do it for my teeth and gums. If it is doing anything else for me health wise, then that is a bonus.
It is also recommended for giving the body a detox.
Again I can’t comment on this. I don’t really feel it is doing anything other than being good for my teeth and gums.
Pulling oil is often mentioned as a way to help whiten teeth. I haven’t noticed this either, other than keeping the dentist away.
One study found pulling oil with sesame oil helped in controlling oral malodor (bad breath) and bacteria. I haven’t had anyone complain about me having bad breath so maybe!

Again I can’t comment on any of these health claims.
To me, it seems like a very tall order. I really am skeptical the health benefits of oil pulling is the answer for any of the above problems.
For a start, I notice no difference in my sleeping pattern.
Perhaps, I am in good health because I am continually doing Ayurvedic oil pulling. Besides, all the other little things I do.
I swish a small tablespoon or 10 ml of oil for about 18 to 20 minutes. First thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
This is the usual advice, although you can do it anytime you have an empty stomach.
20 minutes may seem like a long time. After you have tried it a few times, it does get easier and you will notice the time passes quite quickly.
Start slow if you feel 20 minutes is too much.
You can begin with 5 minutes and work your way up. Soon you will be enjoying Ayurvedic oil pulling for 18 to 20 minutes with no trouble at all.
Don’t ever do it for longer than required, as the toxins in the oil end up back in your system. This just defeats the purpose.
When it comes to the health benefits of oil pulling the oil suggested to use is cold pressed sesame oil.
Many people will use sunflower oil, olive or coconut oil. I usually use organic sesame oil or organic coconut oil, depending on what is in the cupboard.
My preference is coconut oil for pulling. It tastes sweeter and actually makes a great mouthwash.
Coconut oil has vitamin E, antioxidants, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Spit the oil out when finished. Best to spit into a paper towel and throw in the rubbish bin, or down the toilet, the oil is full of bacteria.
I usually spit it into the toilet.
Once you spit the oil out, you will notice the consistency is a lot thinner. It feels like water and is a milky white colour.
Rinse mouth with water or salt and water, and brush teeth.
When finished, I brush my teeth with a natural soap, and not a fluoride toothpaste.
To get the most out of the health benefits of oil pulling focus on pulling the oil in and out of the teeth. Don’t gargle and do not swallow, remember this oil is toxic.

Despite the lack of scientific research, this is something worth trying to see for yourself if it is helping with any other health problems.
It is definitely worth doing for any teeth or gum problems, that’s for sure.
If you are looking for a fix for any particular health problem you are experiencing. I would suggest you don’t rely on oil pulling as the answer.
Rather as an accompaniment to all the other healthy things you are doing.
